If you’ve spent approximately 3.7 seconds on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the adorable little Mini Dot Cakes popping up everywhere.
And yes.
We jumped on the trend.
Because duh.
They’re tiny. They’re cute. They’re ridiculously easy to make. They look like something you’d find in a boutique bakery for $12, but they can be sitting in your refrigerator waiting to save dessert emergencies at a moment’s notice.
Honestly, we never stood a chance.
These little cake jars are perfect for gifting, parties, birthdays, teacher gifts, thank-you treats, or simply rewarding yourself for surviving another Tuesday. Plus, they stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks and can be frozen for 2-3 months, which means future-you gets dessert with basically zero effort.
And we fully support that.

What You’ll Need
The ingredient list is refreshingly short:
- A small jar or cup (6-8 oz. jars work perfectly)
- Cake of your choice
- Frosting
- Rainbow nonpareil sprinkles (or any sprinkles your heart desires)
For our version, we used:
- Classic Vanilla Cake
- Classic Chocolate Cake
But honestly, almost any cake flavor works. Try one of our favorites:
- Classic Vanilla Cake
- Classic Chocolate Cake
- Red Velvet Cake
- Funfetti Cake
- Carrot Cake
Because life’s too short to limit yourself to one cake flavor.
How to Make Mini Dot Cakes
Step 1: Bake Your Cake
Bake your favorite cake recipe and allow it to cool completely.
This is important.
Warm cake plus frosting equals a melted mess, and while we’re all for “rustic,” there’s a limit.
Step 2: Cut Cake Circles
Using your jar opening or a similarly sized round cookie cutter, cut circles from your cake.
Place the first cake round into your jar until it fills approximately the bottom third of the container.
Step 3: Add Frosting
Pipe or spoon a layer of frosting on top of the cake.
Don’t stress about perfection here.
The sprinkles are about to distract everyone anyway.
Step 4: Add Another Layer of Cake
Place a second cake round on top until the cake reaches roughly three-quarters of the way up the jar.
Step 5: Top With More Frosting
Fill the remaining space with frosting.
Generously.
This is not the time for restraint.
Step 6: Create a Flat Surface
Use an offset spatula, spoon, or butter knife to smooth the frosting flush with the top of the jar.
You’re creating the canvas for the cutest part of this entire project.
Step 7: Prepare the Sprinkles
Pour your rainbow nonpareils (or favorite sprinkles) into a shallow bowl or plate.
Try not to spill them everywhere.
You will fail.
But try anyway.
Step 8: Make the Dot Top
Turn the jar upside down and gently press the frosting surface into the sprinkles.
Twist slightly if needed until the entire frosting top is covered.
Then flip it back over and admire your work.
It’s giving bakery.
It’s giving adorable.
It’s giving “I absolutely made these myself and didn’t buy them.”
Step 9: Enjoy Your Mini Dot Cake
Congratulations.
You now have a perfectly adorable Mini Dot Cake.
They’re colorful, portable, giftable, and dangerously easy to keep stocked in your fridge.
Which is both a blessing and a problem.
Mostly a blessing.

Storage Tips
One of the best things about Mini Dot Cakes (besides eating them) is how well they store.
- Refrigerate covered for up to 2-3 weeks
- Freeze for up to 2-3 months
So go ahead and make a batch ahead of time. Future-you will be extremely grateful when a dessert craving strikes and all that’s required is opening the fridge.
Or freezer.
Or both.
We don’t judge.
Final Thoughts
Mini Dot Cakes may be trendy right now, but honestly, we understand why.
They’re easy.
They’re cute.
They’re delicious.
They make fantastic gifts.
And they somehow make eating cake out of a jar feel completely reasonable.
Which is exactly the kind of energy we’re bringing into this season.
Happy baking!
