How to Cut a Tall Round Cake: 3 Easy Serving Methods for Every Celebration

116

Whether you’re serving a wedding cake, birthday cake, baby shower cake, or celebration dessert, knowing how to cut a tall round cake can make serving faster, neater, and help you get the most servings from your cake.

Many people automatically cut cakes into traditional wedges, but depending on the size of your cake and the number of guests, there are often better methods. Below are three of the most popular ways to cut a tall round cake, complete with step-by-step instructions.

Method 1: Traditional Wedge Style

Perfect for smaller gatherings and family celebrations.

Step 1: Cut the Cake in Half

Slice straight through the center of the cake from one side to the other, creating two equal halves.

Step 2: Cut Into Quarters

Rotate the cake 90 degrees and cut through the center again to create four equal quarters.

Step 3: Slice Into Wedges

Cut each quarter into 3–4 equal wedges, depending on your desired serving size.

Step 4: Serve the Cake

Use a cake server to gently lift each wedge onto a plate, working your way around the cake.

Method 2: Event Style Slab/Column Method (Best for Large Parties)

The slab or column method is commonly used by professional bakeries and caterers because it creates consistent portions and maximizes servings.

Step 1: Plan Your Cuts

The number of servings you get will depend on the size of your cake and how large you want each serving to be. Before cutting, visually plan evenly spaced vertical column cuts across the cake.

Step 2: Cut the Cake Into Even Sections

Starting at one side of the cake, cut vertically in straight, parallel lines across the entire cake. Space your cuts evenly to create long sections. Adjust the width depending on your desired serving size.

Step 3: Remove One Section

Carefully remove one of the cut sections and place it flat on a clean cutting board with the cake layers visible.

Step 4: Cut Vertically

Cut vertically through the section to divide it into evenly sized pieces. The number of vertical cuts will depend on the size of your cake and your desired serving size.

Step 5: Create Individual Servings

If needed, make additional cuts to divide the rows into smaller, individual portions. For the cake shown, each section can be divided into six party-size servings.

Step 6: Repeat, Plate & Serve

Continue working through the cake one section at a time—cutting vertically first, then horizontally—until you have your desired number of servings. Transfer the individual pieces to plates and enjoy!

Method 3: Rings & Wedges Method

This method works well for medium to large round cakes and provides evenly sized servings while maintaining the cake’s shape during serving.

Part 1: Cutting the Outer Ring

Step 1: Mark the Circle

Place a small bowl or pan in the center of the cake as a guide. Cut a complete circle about 2 inches from the outer edge, all the way down to the cake board.

Step 2: Slice the Outer Ring

Cut straight lines from the inner circle to the outside edge, spacing each slice about 1–1½ inches wide.

Step 3: Remove the Outer Pieces

Lift out each outer slice with a cake server. Continue until the entire outer ring has been removed.

Step 4: Repeat for Large Cakes

If your cake is very wide (10 inches or more), cut a second inner ring about 2 inches inside the first one and slice it into equal portions the same way.

Part 2: Cutting the Inner Core

Step 5: Reveal the Center

Once the outer ring has been removed, you’ll have a smaller round cake remaining in the center.

Step 6: Cut Into Wedges

Slice the remaining center cake into traditional pie-shaped wedges for serving.

Pro Tip for Perfect Cake Slices

For the cleanest cuts and picture-perfect layers, use a long, sharp knife and wipe the blade clean between each cut. A warm knife also helps glide through buttercream and ganache for beautifully clean slices.

Which Cake Cutting Method Should You Choose?

  • Large weddings or events: Event Style Slab/Column Method
  • Birthday parties and showers: Rings & Wedges Method
  • Small family celebrations: Traditional Wedge Method

No matter which method you choose, planning your cuts ahead of time will help ensure everyone receives an evenly sized slice and your beautiful cake stays looking its best throughout the celebration.

Happy serving!
